CBD (cannabidiol) has become one of the most talked-about ingredients in premium skincare over the past few years. Cut through the noise and here's what the research actually says about what it does — and doesn't do — for your skin.
What is CBD?
CBD is a non-psychoactive compound derived from the cannabis plant. Unlike THC, it has no mind-altering effects whatsoever. In skincare, it's used topically — meaning it's applied to the skin's surface and doesn't enter the bloodstream in any meaningful amount.
What does CBD actually do for skin?
The most well-supported benefit of topical CBD is its anti-inflammatory and calming effect on the skin. Research suggests that CBD interacts with receptors in the skin's own endocannabinoid system, helping to regulate inflammation, reduce redness and calm reactive or irritated skin. This makes it particularly relevant for sensitive skin, redness-prone skin and conditions exacerbated by inflammation.
CBD also has antioxidant properties, helping to defend skin against the environmental stressors that contribute to premature ageing. Some research suggests it may help regulate sebum production, making it potentially useful for oily and acne-prone skin as well.
What CBD doesn't do
It's worth being clear: topical CBD isn't a medical treatment and won't cure skin conditions. Claims that it can treat eczema, psoriasis or acne as a medical matter are not supported by current evidence — and any brand making those claims is overstepping. What CBD can do is help skin look and feel calmer, more balanced and more comfortable.
What to look for in a CBD skincare product
Look for a clearly stated CBD concentration — typically 0.1% to 1% for meaningful topical benefit. The formulation matters too: CBD needs to be paired with appropriate carrier ingredients to penetrate the outer layers of the skin effectively. Organic hemp seed oil — a natural carrier for CBD — is ideal.
