Sensitive skin is one of the most common skin concerns — and one of the most misunderstood. True sensitivity means skin that reacts easily to products, environmental factors or stress. But most people who describe themselves as having sensitive skin are actually dealing with a compromised skin barrier, not inherent sensitivity. The good news is that both can be managed with the right approach.
The difference between sensitive and sensitised skin
True sensitive skin is a genetic predisposition — the skin's nerve endings are more reactive than average, leading to redness, tingling and discomfort in response to triggers. It's less common than people think.
Sensitised skin is far more common — it's skin that has become reactive as a result of over-exfoliation, harsh products, environmental damage or a weakened skin barrier. The good news is that sensitised skin can recover. The approach is the same either way: simplify, soothe and protect.
Ingredients to look for
For sensitive and sensitised skin, focus on calming and barrier-supporting ingredients. Prebiotics support a healthy skin microbiome and reduce inflammation. Ceramides replenish the protective lipid layer. Centella asiatica soothes redness and supports healing. Hyaluronic acid provides gentle, effective hydration without any irritation risk. Aloe vera calms and cools reactive skin.
Ingredients to avoid
Fragrance — both synthetic and natural/essential oil-derived — is the number one trigger for sensitive skin reactions. Alcohol (specifically drying alcohols like ethanol and denatured alcohol) strips the skin barrier. High concentrations of exfoliating acids used too frequently will worsen sensitivity over time. Sulphates in cleansers disrupt the skin's natural pH.

The patch test rule
Always patch test any new product before applying it to your full face. Apply a small amount to the inside of your wrist or behind your ear and wait 24 to 48 hours. If no reaction occurs, it's safe to proceed.
