Peptides have become one of the most talked-about ingredients in premium skincare — and unlike many trends, the science behind them is genuinely strong. Here's what peptides actually are and what they can do for your skin.
What are peptides?
Peptides are short chains of amino acids — the building blocks of proteins. In your skin, proteins like collagen and elastin provide structure, firmness and elasticity. As we age, the production of these proteins naturally slows, which leads to the visible signs of ageing: fine lines, wrinkles and a loss of firmness.
When certain peptides are applied topically, they can signal to skin cells to produce more collagen — essentially sending a message to the skin that repair is needed. Different peptides target different functions: some stimulate collagen, some target expression lines, some improve barrier function and some have antioxidant properties.
Why peptides are better than retinol for many people
Retinol is effective but comes with significant downsides — irritation, redness, peeling and sun sensitivity are common, especially at higher concentrations. Peptides deliver similar long-term benefits (improved firmness, smoother texture, reduced appearance of fine lines) with virtually none of the side effects. They're suitable for sensitive skin, reactive skin and can be used morning and evening without any adjustment period.
What results can you expect?
Peptides work cumulatively and gradually. Unlike some active ingredients that produce fast, visible results, peptides tend to show their effects over 8 to 12 weeks of consistent use. The results are real and lasting — but patience is required. This is long-term skin investment, not an overnight fix.
How to use peptides
Peptides work best in leave-on products — serums and moisturisers. They can be used morning and evening and layer well with most other ingredients including hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and vitamin C. Avoid using them directly alongside high-percentage acids, as the low pH environment can reduce their effectiveness.
