You'll see ECOCERT mentioned on many premium skincare products — including across the STARLUXE range. But what does the certification actually mean, why does it matter and how is it different from brands that simply call themselves 'natural'?
What is ECOCERT?
ECOCERT is an independent organic certification organisation founded in France in 1991. It's now one of the largest and most respected certification bodies in the world for natural and organic products, operating in over 130 countries. Unlike self-declared 'natural' or 'clean' claims that brands can make without any verification, ECOCERT certification requires products to be independently audited and meet specific, verifiable standards.
What does ECOCERT certification require?
To carry the ECOCERT certification, products must meet strict criteria across several areas. Ingredients must be predominantly of natural origin — ECOCERT sets minimum percentages for natural and organic content. Synthetic ingredients are restricted to a carefully defined list of approved exceptions. Manufacturing processes must minimise environmental impact. Packaging must be biodegradable or recyclable where possible. And ongoing audits ensure products continue to meet the standard after initial certification.
COSMOS Natural vs COSMOS Organic
ECOCERT certifies products under the COSMOS standard, which has two tiers. COSMOS Natural requires at least 95% of all ingredients to be of natural origin, with at least 20% of the total formulation from organic farming. COSMOS Organic requires a minimum of 95% natural-origin ingredients, with at least 10% of the entire formulation (or 95% of physically processed agri-ingredients) certified organic. COSMOS Organic is the higher standard and carries the most rigorous requirements.
Why it matters for your skin
ECOCERT certification gives you verified confidence that the products you're using contain predominantly natural ingredients, have been independently assessed and meet some of the most rigorous clean beauty standards in the world. It removes the guesswork that comes with unverified 'natural' claims.
