What is Your Skin Barrier and How Do You Fix It?

Your skin barrier is one of the most important — and most overlooked — aspects of skin health. When it's functioning well, your skin looks balanced, feels comfortable and responds well to products. When it's damaged, everything goes wrong at once. Here's what you need to know.

What is the skin barrier?

The skin barrier — also called the stratum corneum — is the outermost layer of your skin. Think of it like the mortar between bricks: a mix of skin cells held together by lipids (fats) including ceramides, fatty acids and cholesterol. This structure keeps moisture in and irritants, pollution and bacteria out.

Your skin also has a microbiome — a community of beneficial bacteria that live on the surface and play a key role in barrier function and immune response. When both the physical barrier and the microbiome are healthy, skin looks and feels its best.

Signs your skin barrier is damaged

A damaged skin barrier often presents as skin that feels tight, dry or rough. You might notice redness, flaking or sensitivity that wasn't there before. Breakouts can increase because bacteria get in more easily. Products that used to work fine may suddenly sting or cause irritation. If your skin feels reactive and nothing seems to help, a compromised barrier is often the cause.

What damages the skin barrier?

Over-exfoliation is one of the most common causes — using acids or physical scrubs too frequently strips the protective lipid layer. Harsh cleansers, hot water, low humidity, pollution and certain medications can all contribute. Ironically, using too many active ingredients at once — even good ones — can overwhelm and damage the barrier.

How to repair your skin barrier

Stop over-exfoliating. If you've been using acids daily, cut back to once or twice a week — or stop entirely until your barrier recovers.

Switch to a gentle cleanser. Use only mild, non-stripping cleansers with no harsh sulphates or fragrances. Our Oil-To-Milk Cleanser or Gentle Cleansing Foam are both ideal.

Add ceramides and barrier-supporting ingredients. Ceramides replenish the lipids your barrier needs to function. Our Ceramide Barrier Night Cream is specifically formulated to restore and strengthen the barrier overnight.

Support your microbiome with prebiotics. Prebiotics feed the beneficial bacteria on your skin, helping restore a healthy microbiome. Our Bioactive Prebiotic Jelly Serum is one of the most effective barrier-supporting products in our range.

Hydrate and seal. Layer hyaluronic acid under a moisturiser to lock in water. Our Sensitive Skin Moisturiser, Fragrance Free is designed for exactly this purpose.

Be patient. Barrier repair takes time — typically 2 to 4 weeks of a stripped-back, gentle routine before you see significant improvement.

Once your barrier is repaired

Reintroduce actives slowly — one at a time, starting with the mildest options. Listen to your skin. If it reacts, pull back. A healthy barrier is the foundation everything else is built on.
