Clean skincare has become one of the biggest buzzwords in beauty — but what does it actually mean? And how do you know if a brand is genuinely clean or just using the word as a marketing tool?
What does clean skincare mean?
There's no single legal definition of clean beauty, which is partly why it's so easy for brands to misuse the term. In practice, clean skincare refers to products formulated without ingredients that are known or suspected to be harmful — parabens, sulphates, synthetic fragrances, formaldehyde-releasing preservatives and certain hormone-disrupting chemicals.
But truly clean formulations go further — they're transparent about what they contain, responsibly sourced and, at the highest standard, independently certified.
What certifications actually mean something?
ECOCERT. One of the world's leading organic and natural certification organisations. ECOCERT-certified products must meet strict standards for ingredient sourcing, formulation and manufacturing — independently verified, not self-declared.
COSMOS Natural and COSMOS Organic. The COSMOS standard is a globally recognised framework for natural and organic cosmetics. COSMOS Natural requires a minimum percentage of natural ingredients and prohibits a long list of synthetics. COSMOS Organic goes further, requiring ingredients from organic farming.
Why does it matter for your skin?
Your skin absorbs a significant proportion of what you put on it. Choosing cleaner products reduces your cumulative exposure to potentially harmful chemicals. For sensitive or acne-prone skin, avoiding synthetic fragrance and certain preservatives can make a real practical difference.
What about EU regulations?
EU Regulation 1223/2009 is one of the strictest cosmetic regulations in the world. EU-manufactured products must undergo safety assessments, be registered on the CPNP database and carry a named Responsible Person. This baseline protection is significantly higher than in many other markets.
