Double cleansing has become one of the most recommended steps in skincare — and once you understand why it works, it's hard to go back. Here's everything you need to know.
What is double cleansing?
Double cleansing means cleansing your face twice in the evening — first with an oil-based or biphasic cleanser to dissolve makeup, SPF and excess sebum, followed by a water-based cleanser to remove any remaining residue and cleanse the skin itself. The two-step approach works because different types of product require different types of cleanser to break down effectively.
Why does it matter?
SPF and long-wear makeup are specifically designed to be resistant to water and sweat — which means a single water-based cleanser often doesn't fully remove them, even when you rinse thoroughly. When SPF or makeup residue sits on your skin overnight, it can clog pores, contribute to breakouts, and prevent your evening skincare products from absorbing properly.
Double cleansing solves this completely. The first cleanse removes everything on the surface. The second cleanse actually cleanses the skin.
Who should double cleanse?
Anyone who wears SPF (which should be everyone), makeup, or both. Even if you don't wear makeup, if you wear SPF daily — which you should — double cleansing in the evening will make a noticeable difference to your skin over time.
If you have very dry or sensitive skin and find double cleansing too stripping, you can use a gentle oil or micellar water as your first cleanse rather than a full oil cleanser, which is much lighter on the skin.
How to double cleanse properly
Step 1 — First cleanse. Apply your first cleanser to dry skin. This is important — water will dilute an oil-based cleanser and reduce its effectiveness. Massage gently for 30 to 60 seconds, then emulsify with a little water and rinse.
Step 2 — Second cleanse. Apply your water-based cleanser to damp skin. Massage for another 30 seconds, then rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. Pat dry with a clean towel.
